Depilatory creams or lotions carry chemicals that dissolve superficial hair. Application of these creams and lotions is easy, but the effect of hair removal is considered temporary. Just like shaving, hair found on the skin is “dissolved”. The chemical does not penetrate the hair root but depilatory creams or lotions should not stay long on the skin for risks of chemical absorption.
Procedure
Depilatory creams and lotions are slathered onto the skin. After a few minutes, the application will dissolve the hair shafts found outside the skin. The application does not penetrate deeper into the skin. Leaving the product might irritate the skin if left for longer periods. A piece of cloth is used to wipe off the lotion and the hair out.
Like all depilation techniques, hair is temporarily removed and growth is usually seen after a few days. This is a very messy procedure but can be easily done at home. The smell of the depilatory cream and lotion might be too strong for some users.
Cost
Depilatories can be bought anywhere. Different brands are available and are very affordable.
Pain Factor
There is no known pain experienced when using depilatories.
Risks
There are risks of skin irritation when product stays too long on skin. Allergic reactions might be seen on individuals sensitive to the chemicals used in depilatory creams and lotions.
