Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is defined as a procedure done by a dermatologist wherein the top layer skin is being “scraped off” using a wheel brush or diamond wheel. This resurfacing sounds harmless; however, the abrading action of this technique can injure the skin. Bleeding on the wound area is not an uncommon sight. The face is the most frequented site for dermabrasion but other parts can be treated as well. This procedure is specially done for people who have deep acne scars and fine line wrinkles. Through dermabrasion, chances of having a scar-free face are possible.

Additionally, microdermabrasion is different from dermabrasion. The former tends to treat on the superficial skin while the latter abrades on a deeper level.

Dermabrasion is done to treat skin problems in the upper layers of the skin. These include scars caused by acne, trauma and surgery; superficial skin growths and fine lines and wrinkles especially around the mouth. Not everybody is a candidate for beauty enhancement, so check with your doctor or qualified skin specialist before deciding to do this.

Pain Factor
After undergoing the procedure, there is the usual post-operative pain. Many people might feel little to no pain at all. But should there be discomfort from redness and swelling, over-the-counter painkillers can address this problem.

Recovery Time
Skin heals to its new layer within 5 to 8 days after treatment. Because dermabrasion acts to deliberately wound the treated area, expect bleeding, swelling and a little pain. Several trips to your doctor might be needed to check on your skin’s status. The skin’s healing must be noted and observed to be able to reach its full recovery and expected results. Dermabrasion does not promise 100% treatment to your skin problems, so keep the expectations low.

Risks
There are noted temporary effects after dermabrasion. Scarring may result since the abrading action goes on a deeper skin level. Swelling and redness is inevitable but usually disappears within 6 to 12 weeks.  There could be milia, the medical term for pimple flare-ups that can be treated with antibiotics. Additionally, there is increased sun sensitivity and the danger of hyperpigmentation as an after-effect. Infections, usually viral in nature, may also occur.
